Rabbi Yehuda Assad (1796-1866) is the author of several volumes of Responsa as well as an important commentary on Pirkei Avot. Born in Assad, north of Budapest, he served as Rabbi of Szerdahely from 1853 until his death. After the passing of the Chasam Sofer, he was regarded as the head of Hungarian Jewry. “ASSAD , R. Yehudah (1796-1866)

Born in Assad, a village north of Budapest, R. Yehudah studied in the Yeshivah of R. Mordechai Banet in Nikolsburg. His sharp acumen made a great impression on R. Mordechai, and he was given Semichah at the age of 22. He served as Rabbi of Rete (near Pressburg), Szenitz (near Nitra), and in 1853 was chosen as the Rabbi of Szerdahely where he remained for the rest of his life. After the death of Chatham Sofer, R. Yehudah came to be regarded as the spiritual leader of Hungarian Jewry.
