About Rev. John Gardner Davis

Rev. John Gardner Davis

Find A Grave Memorial ID # 103443120

He is also known by Rev. John Gardner Davis, but there is no proof for this middle name at this time.

Rev. Davis was born in 1762 in Orange County, Virginia. He was the son of Jonathan and Lucy Davis (Gibbs). He married Mary 'Polly' Easton on June 27, 1789 in Orange County, Virginia, Colonial America. After 1800, he moved to Georgia and became a Baptist Minister. He later went to Tennessee and then finally settled in Franklin County, Alabama, where he stayed there until his death.

Reuben E. Davis, his son, in his book Recollections of Mississippi and Mississippians, says: "My father was one of the earliest settlers in this county (Russell Valley, Alabama). He was a man of limited means and though of strong and vigorous intellect, had only the imperfect education of the pioneers of that day. His chief study was the Bible and a few volumes of history which formed his only library. Although a Baptist Minister of high standing, he occupied himself during the week, with ordinary farm labor, and could never be induced to accept any compensation for his services in the church; this would have been according to his belief, 'serving the Lord for hire.' Both of my parents were born in Virginia. and remained there until ten children were added to their family. Then they moved to Tenn. and settled near Winchester, where I was the twelfth and last child born. When I was about five years old my father moved from Tennessee to North Alabama"

"My father did not allow his children to read the Bible, holding that it could only be studied with profit by those whose minds were fully matured and informed by experience. I was, however, taught that the world was exactly six thousand years old, and I believed it to a day; I was told that Adam was created out of the dust of the ground ; and Eve out of a rib of Adam's side; I believed this too. I was informed that placed in a delightful garden they ate of the forbidden tree and thus came death and all our woe ! All this I devoutly believed upon my father's testimony."

John Davis and his wife, Mary Polly Eastin are buried in a little cemetery in Russellville, some distance across Cedar Creek from Ben Harris Cemetery. [3]

Davis Cemetery is on the road that goes from Village Farm to Orman Bridge. Here are buried John and Mary Davis and possibly some of their children who died young.
