About Reverend Samuel McBee

He was the son of William & Abigail McBee born in a part of Halifax County that would latter become Pittsylvania County in 1776.

The first record we have of him in Tennessee in the "List of Taxables 1790" Washington County, Tennessee. Note that Washington county at the time covered the entire state.

In 1794 & 1795 in Court Records of Knox County as selling land on Falling Branch of Horse Creek, Washington County.

Samuel married Ann Hamilton, 2 Nov 1797, in the newly formed Grainger County.

He purchased 580 acres, Dec 14 1816, north side of the Clinch River in Lone Mtn (purchase from Thomas McCarry of Knoxville for $1,200. Witnessed by son William, William Hamilton Sr., and Wm. Hamilton Jr..

County records also show Samuel as slave owner in 1811 & 1815. He became a minister of the gospel the 29th day of October 1820. (Click on small document at right to enlarge)

He was the preacher for the Big Springs Primitive Baptist Church 1824-1835. He was at the Mountain Creek Baptist church in 1839 and again in 1850. (As delegate to Association of Baptists) 3 Oct 1859.

Like all men of the time he was also a farmer, hunter and woodsman.

A paper purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of Samuel McBee, deceased was presented in open court. Samuel Vance appeared as a subscribing witness. The will has never found in records of Claiborne County.

BIOGRAPHICAL DATA: Rev. McBee came to Love Mtn. TN about 1808. He deeded land to Thomas Johnson in Claibourne Co., Tennessee, 1819. He was a moderator from about 1825 to 1837 for the Big Springs Primitive Baptist Church, the oldest church in Claibourne Co., Tenn. He was also a moderator for other churches in the county. (Records from the Big Springs Baptist Church had not been searched as of Jan. 1st, 1994.)

[Sept. 11, 1843; #22, Vol. R, p.355.] 2. 1843, grantee, 100 acres of land from John, Calvin M. & James H. McBEE, on Lone Mountain, bounded by Calvin & William McBEE, previous grantor to same individuals by deed July 29, 1835. [Sept. 7, 1845, #22, Vol. S, pp. 419-420.] 3. Grainger Co. Deeds (list Samuel Jr. as son of Samuel Sr.)

LDS: SS, Batch # 8231909-68. BE, Batch # 8220103-76; No previous sealing to James & Sarah McBEE as the other children.

PENSION AFFIDAVIT: Signed Oct. 4, 1844, Grainger Co. TN, for Invalid Pension for Israel McBEE. Samuel McBee sworn to these facts: (1) that he was 73 (cal. b. 1771). (2) that Israel McBEE had received a pension for RW service which was suspended. (3) that he personally saw the parole papers signed by Col. Farlton, which were destroyed when his father's home was burned. (4) that Israel McBee served for 22 months from May 1778, in regular service, until the defeat of Col. Buford's retreat; and that his family at first believed that he was among the slain. Sworn to before Jense P. Besler, J.P. for Grainger Co. TN, who certified that Samuel McBEE was a minister of the Gospel. RE: File 2784, Invalid Pensions. [Vol. A, P. 223], August 25, 1831. Israel McBEE, c/o Gray GARETT, Esq., Tazwell 11, Tennessee (the nearest P.O. to his dwelling). Letter to Mrs. John McBEE, November 23, 1923, further stated that his father, who was then living in Washington Co. TN, sent Israel to Pittsylvania Co., Virginia (where the family originated). Israel there enlisted on 9th day of August, 1778, and returned home August 1780.
