About Richard Hutchinson, of Salem

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hutchinson-201

Richard Hutchinson was born in England about 1602, as in 1660 he deposed that his age was fifty-eight.[1] His parents and specific place of birth are uncertain.[2] He has often been stated to be, without solid proof, the son of Thomas and Alice Hutchinson of Arnold and Newark in Nottinghamshire, England.[3][4][5]

He arrived in New England in 1634 with his wife Alice and several children and settled in Salem, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.[6]

Alice Hutchinson was the mother of all of his children. She joined the Salem church in 1637, and died before October 1668 when Richard married Susanna Archer.[10][11] She was the widow of Samuel Archer of Salem.

Susanna died on 26 November 1674.[12] Richard then married, as his last wife, Sarah Standish, the widow of James Standish of Salem who had died in 1679 and had Richard Hutchinson as his administrator.[13][6]

Family

Richard's children by his first wife Alice Bosworth born in England before his emigration were as follows:

  1. 1. Alice, baptized at North Muskham in the county of Nottingham, on the 27th of Sept, 1628, and buried there in the same year.[2]
  2. 2. Elizabeth, baptized at Arnold (her grandfather's residence), on the 30th of August, 1629. She was a member of the First Church in Danvers, and married Nathaniel Putnam, deacon of said church, and a man of much influence in the church and town. She died in Danvers June 24, 1688-9.[2]
  3. 3. Mary, baptized at North Muskham, on the 28th of Dec., 1630. She was married 26th of May, 1657, to Thomas Hale of Newbury, Mass., and died October 22, 1688.[2]
  4. 4. Rebecca, born in England about 1632. She married Mr. James Hadlock, of Salem, Mass., May, 1658.[2]
  5. 5. Joseph, (of whom hereafter).[2]

Richard mentioned below:

John Porter, called "Farmer Porter," came with his sons from Hingham, and bought up lands to the north of Duck or Crane River. His family before long held among them more land, it is probable, than any other. He served many years as deputy in the General Court, first from Hingham and then from Salem. He is spoken of in the colonial records of Massachusetts as "of good repute for piety, integrity, and estate." The Barneys, Leaches, and others went eastwardly towards Bass River. The Putnams followed up Beaver Brook to Beaver Dam, and spread out towards the north and west; while Richard Hutchinson turned southerly to the interval between Whipple and Hathorne Hills, bought the Stileman grant, and cleared the beautiful meadows where the old village meeting-house afterwards stood. He was a vigorous and intelligent agriculturist, and a man of character. He died in 1681, at eighty years of age, leaving a large and well-improved estate. His will has this item: I give "five acres of land to Black Peter, my servant." He had given fine farms to his children severally, many years before his death. His second wife, who survived him, had no children. He had come by her into possession of a valuable addition to his estate. After distributing his property, and providing legacies for children and grandchildren, his will left it to the option of his widow to spend the residue of her days either in the family of his son Joseph, or elsewhere; if she should prefer to live elsewhere, then she should receive back, in her own right, all the property she had originally owned; if she continued to live to her death in Joseph's family, then her property was to go to him and his heirs. This, I think, shows that he was as sagacious as he was just. http://www.gutenberg.org/files/17845/17845-8.txt
