Most researchers believe that "Olde" Robert Selfe was the ancestor of most of the Self family in America. Arriving in Virginia in the middle 1600s, Robert Selfe appears to have been christened Roboham Selfe, son of Robert Selfe, and grandson of Walter Selfe of Cripplegate, London, England. The family name was prominent in the Wiltshire area and appears to have been associated with many of the Quaker (Society of Friends) movement there.

"Olde" Robert Self had two wives whose first names are known, but whose last names are speculative. These women are Jane Bean (c. 1635 – 1670) and Mary Antsy, the second wife (c. 1643 – 1713). There are a number of sons, among them Stephen, Francis, Robert Jr, Christian, William and John. SPEECH MADE BY DANIEL McCARTHY ON APRIL 24, 2004:

(In dedication of the Sir Robert Selfe Memorial in Hague, VA.):

"Our Robert Selfe was the ancestor of numerous Self-named descendants who served in the military, bringing us the freedoms we enjoy and take for granted today:

-- 2 soldiers of the French and Indian War

-- a dozen plus soldiers in the Revolutionary War

--20 more soldiers of the War of 1812

-- 96 Union soldiers and 390 Confederate soldiers of the Civil War

-- Plus soldiers of the Wars that have followed.

_One descendant [James C. Self] became the richest and most philanthropic man in the Carolinas. And another [Carl Albert] with a Self grandmother became Vice President of the United States. But, the real pride and backbone of the Self family - yesterday and today - are the doctors, lawyers, teachers, preachers, farmers, homebuilders - yes, even log homebuilders - pioneers all - who settled throughout this country, worked hard and built families. You don't have to look back as far as 350 years to see your own direct Self ancestor and the contributions he or she made to your life."
