About Roger Lane, of Hereford
concerns
While some people would like to believe that this Roger was a son of Sir Ralph Lane, Kt., of Orlingbury and Maud Lane, there is absolutely no evidence for this. In fact, the evidence suggests otherwise:
- Sir Ralph was from Orlingbury, Northamptonshire. He was also styled "of Hogshaw", which is in nearby Buckinghamshire.
- Maud was from Kendal, Westmorland. The pedigree of Maud is well known, since she was a cousin of Catherine Parr, Queen consort of England and Ireland, the last wife of Henry VIII, King of England.
- Sir Ralph married Maud in 1523. Their only three sons were Robert, Ralph and William. (They also had seven daughters.) There is no evidence to suggest that Maud bore a son named Roger in Herefordshire. There's also no reliable source showing this Roger Lane as the son of Sir William Lane, MP, of Horton and Alis Lane.
- This Roger was born in Hereford in 1569 and spent his entire life in Herefordshire. He was a commoner and part of the merchant middle class as an apothecary, and he most certainly was not nobility.
- Mattheiss Riegell XII found a baptismal record for a Roger Lane in Madley, Herefordshire, in 1572; his parents were Walter and Aloicia. That Roger could be this Roger, although the date is a bit late, and Roger Lane seems to have been a common name at the time.
Disconnected May 2015.
comments
Date of birth might be 1572 (if this Roger is the aforementioned Roger that was baptized in Madley in 1572).
Place of birth has been specifically (and erroneously?) reported to be St Peter's Church at Hereford. He may have been baptized there, if he wasn't baptized in Madley, but he would not have been born there.
Date and place of death have also been erroneously reported to be April 30, 1603 in Herefordshire, England, but that is actually his date of burial, according to St. Peter's Church records, so he must have died prior to that.
