About Roman Petrushevych

Roman Petrushevych was the youngest son of Rev. Omelian Petrushevych and Savyna Kotsiuba. Roman was born on June 15, 1872 in the town of Busk, Kamianka Strumilova county, Ukraine. As a year-long volunteer, he was enlisted into Austrian military service in 1894 with the 80th infantry regiment. Roman graduated from officers and intendant school in Vienna and passed his exams to become part of the provisions officers reserve. In time, he was appointed as an assistant provisions officer. Roman graduated from law school in 1900 in Lviv and was a judge with the County Court in Kamianka Strumilova.

With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, he was again called up into military service and ended up in the surrounded Peremysl. After their surrender in 1915, he was transferred along with other officers to the prisoners' camp in Siberia, from which he only returned in 1918.

During the time of the Western Ukrainian National Republic (ZUNR) in 1918-19, he was the county comisar for the Ukrainian State in Kamianka Strumilova. He was asked to take this position by the chairman of the Ukrainian County National Council, Rev. Mykhailo Tsehelsky, a well-known community activitist in Halychyna and father to an equally well-known political and community activist, accomplished journalist and a Member of Parliament to the Vienna Parliament and the Secretary of Internal Affairs in the ZUNR government - Dr. Lonhyn Tsehelsky. It was with Rev. M. Tsehelsky and with medical doctor Jaciw, that Roman Petrushevych formed a trio that led all of the national work in the county. Thanks to their efforts, a large, multi-floored National Home was built in Kamianka Strumilova, which housed all the Ukrainian societies, the high school bursa and a store in the foyer.

During the Polish times, Roman Petrushevych went underground for more than two years in Lviv, and later became a functionary with the Land Hipotechnic Bank and around 1930 he opened his own private law office in Kamianka Strumilova. Thanks to the efforts of a Polish friend, whose life Roman Petruhevych had saved during his times as komisar, and who he had now met by chance as a high ranking ministerial civil servant in Warsaw, Petrushevych was was reinstated with the judicial service and appointed head of the city court in Vadovytsi, and after a few years as radnyk of the Circular Court in that city.

The Bolshevik occupation of Halychyna in 1939 found him in Kamianka Strumilova, where he had gone on vacation to visit his family. In the Spring of 1940, Roman was detained by the NKVD, arrested and exiled (it is not known to where). He disappeared without a trace. His wife Ihnatija, the daughter of Rev. Stepan Petrushevych (parish priest in Kholoyiv) and their two sons Jurij and Stepan were deported to Kazakhstan, where she and her son Stepan died. During the repatriation of Poles from the USSR during the summer of 1941, Jurij was successful, primarily due to his position as judge in Vadovytsi, to travel to the West, where he married and had an only daughter Elizabeth.
