He emigrated to New England in Nov. 1637 and upon his arrival joined the Hutchinson party in the settlement of Rhode Island. He was long one of the chief persons in the affairs of that Colony, was pastor of the First Baptist Church at Newport, was agent of the Colony in England, 1651-1663, being instrumental in procuring the Colonial charter in the latter year, and after his return to Newport was deputy governor of Rhode Island, 1669-1672. While in England he practised his profession as a physician and published two books, “A Conccordance of the Holy Scriptures” and “Ill News from New England.” Tradition says that Dr Clarke was educated at Leyden, but this has not been verified.
    • 7 William, bapt. at Westhorpe 16 Feb. 1611/12. He was the only member of the family who remained in England.
    • 8. Joseph, b. 9 Dec. and bapt. at Westhorpe 16 Dec. 1618; d. 1 June 1694; m. (1) _______; m. (2) Margaret ______, who d. in 1694. He emigrated to Rhode Island in 1638 and resided in Newport (his son is of Westerly). He was a large landowner, an assistant in 1658 and several later years, and a deputy, 1668-1672 and 1690. He was the only member of the family who left issue in New England, and from him descends the greater part of the Clarke family living in the Narragansett county. Ten Children.
