About Roswell Graves

Rosswell Grave(s) Sr. was christened Jan. 16, 1732, in the Church Of Christ, Durham,,(then)New Haven Co., CN. Lois Coe was Christened in the same church on Aug. 20, 1732. Rev. Goodrich, of the same church, listed in his records on Dec. 26, 1756 that Rosswell and Lois were among those owning to and acknowledging their Baptism Covenant and on Feb. 6, 1757 Lois was admitted to full Communion. Their first three children were baptized by Rev Goodrich, who was pastor there since Nov. 24, 1755. Roswell, with his brothers David and Noadiah, and their sister Elizabeth Sheldon, bought and divided 100 acres in Bedford (now Granville), MA. and moved there, starting the trek of the Graves clan to the American West after the Revolution. He sold his land in Durham, Middlesex Co., CN, in 1759 to Joseph Camp (the deed was dated April 4, 1757 and recorded on Dec. 26, 1759). Lois was admitted to the church in Bedford by letter from Durham. Sometime before 1805, he moved to Chazy, Clinton Co., NY (The further-most Northeast county in the state and next to the Canadian Border). His sons Asher Sr. was living there in 1795, Rufus was there in 1797 and his other sons Ezra, Seth and Chandler had moved there by 1800. In 1802, his son Enoch was listed in the Granville church as "from above Champlain".) At the first Town Meeting in Chazy, the first Tuesday of April, 1794, in the home of his son Eleazer, Eleazor was chosen one of three 'Accessors', son Rufus one of six 'Fence Viewers', son Ezra as Postmaster for District #4, Seth one of two Overseers Of The Poor and one of three "Poundkeepers'. Rosswell Sr. was a member of the Chazy church when it was organized in 1805. On May 8, 1805, Rosswell laid out a road "leading from the State Road toward Plattsburg." During the War of 1812, almost all of the inhabitants, in 1814, moved south to Peru, NY, due to British activity in the area. There is no record of Rosswell and Lois after this dislocation.
