Brief overview:

Schalk (56), a newspaper delivery man died after he was shot by three men who refused to believe his van had broken down near the Durban International Airport on Tuesday.

"He told me they didn't believe the van had broken down," Schalk Visser's wife, Kotie, said earlier in the day.
"That was when they shot him. They didn't take anything. Not his wallet. Not his cellphone. Nothing. They didn't believe him."

Visser, was shot twice in the abdomen. Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said Visser was admitted to Durban's St Augustine's Hospital in a serious condition. Visser was still conscious when he was wheeled into the operating theatre in the morning.

Visser was on his way to the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast with a cargo of Beeld newspapers when his Mercedes van broke down on Tuesday morning. Kotie Visser, who was with her husband, said the van began smoking and broke down on the N2 highway near the intersection for the airport and Durban's Umlazi township.

Moments before she hitched a lift with a passing motorist to get help, two men had warned her and her husband to beware of criminals. "They told us to beware of tsotsis (gangsters) and that it was dangerous (the area where the van had broken down)."

On her way to get help she received a call telling her of the shooting. She said her husband had fired back at the three men.
