Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born Karl Heinrich Fasnacht in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he was 19 years old when he mustered in as a Corporal in Company A, 99th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Sergeant and wounded at the December 13, 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, he performed an act of bravery at the May 12, 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania that would see him awarded the CMOH, with his citation reading "Capture of flag of 2nd Louisiana Tigers (C.S.A.) in a hand-to-hand contest".

During that bloody conflict he fought and wrenched the 2nd Louisiana's flag from its flag bearer, but was soon wounded where he stood. After laying on the battlefield for a number of days, he was finally recovered by the Confederates, and sent to Richmond, Virginia. Before he got there he was rescued by Union troops, and it was revealed he had hid the captured Rebel flag in his blouse while under guard by the rebels. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company A on February 7, 1865, he was honorably mustered out on July 1, 1865, and was awarded his Medal on April 2, 1878.

From "Appletons' Cyclopedia of American Biography, 1600 - 1889, Vol II":

FASNACHT, CHARLES H, soldier, b. in Lancaster county, PA, 27 Mar 1842. He enlisted in 1861 in the 99th PA regiment, and mustered out of service in July 1865, as 1st Lieutenant. On 12 May 1864, just after the taking of the salient at Spottsylvania, he captured the flag of the 2d Louisiana regiment, taking the color-bearer and color-guard prisoners, but was shortly afterward wounded, and fell into the enemy's hands. With over one hundred others he lay on the battle-field several days, waiting to be taken to Richmond, and was finally rescued by National troops. During this time he had the flag concealed in the lining of his blouse. For his gallantry he received the United States Medal of Honor, a silver medal from the directors of the sanitary fair at Philadelphia, and the bronze "Kearny badge." (contributed by dcejka)
