Shubal Gorham (1667-1750) & Puella Hussey (1677-1750)

Shubal Gorham (John & Desire Howland, Ralph) was born 1667 in Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts and died 1750 same state He married Puella Hussey. He was a carpenter in Barnstable . Puella was born 1677 in Massachusetts and died 1763 same state. To this union was born 10 children. Her parents were Stephen Hussey and Martha Bunker.

He met Puella Hussey in Nantucket in 1696. He moved to the ocean side of Barnstable and ran a tavern and filling Mill as well as his trade as a carpenter. While Shubal never lived in Nantucket, he was a Quaker and the Nantucket Quakers all attended Sandwich monthly meetings. 1

He was given an extra share of money from his father’s estate to receive an education in “a learned profession” but chose instead to become a house carpenter. As he was young at his father’s death, his chosen guardian was his brother James. Shubal married Puella Hussey in May 1695[3]. Shubal, his family, and his friends sailed to Nantucket for the wedding. However, on the way, they were taken prisoner and robbed by a French shallop.

Puella was born 10 October 1677[4] to Stephen Hussey and Martha Bunker. The Gorhams moved to South Sea, Barnstable, Massachsetts and Shubal built a tavern. Shubal was judged to be not of a sound mind and son-in-law James Lovell, Jr. was appointed his guardian on 8 July 1749. Shubal died in 1750 in Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts. Shubael’s will was dated 23 September 1748 and proved 7 August 1750.

In the settlement of his father's estate, dated March 7, 1676/7, Shubal was given ?50 to be used to educate him for a learned profession, in addition to his own share, but instead he became a house-carpenter. He was a minor when his father died and, on March 5, 1683/4, he chose his older brother, James, as his guardian. Col. John Gorham's 'Wast Book' states that, when Shubal and his family and friends sailed to Nantucket for his marriage to Puella Hussey, the members of the wedding party were taken prisoner by a French shallop from Port Royal and were stripped of all their valuables.

After his marriage, Shubal moved to South Sea in Barnstable County and built a tavern near Hyannis Port. In 1745, their younger son, Daniel Gorham, died of smallpox in London, England, unmarried, leaving a will dated Barnstable, January 24, 1740, which was proved there in January 1746. In it Daniel named his brother, George and his seven sisters, Abigail, Lydia, Hannah, Theodate, Desire, Ruth and Deborah. Daniel's inventory, which amounted to ?2960-15-1 [a lot of money] included four rights to land in Gorham town, Maine. On July 8, 1749 Shubal Gorham's son-in-law, James Lovell, Jr., of Barnstable, gentleman, the husband of his daughter, Abigail, was appointed as Shubal's guardian after Shubal had been adjudged non compos mentis by the Inquisition of Selectmen. James Lovell was to care for Shubal's person as well as his estate. He was 80 years old at the time.

Shubal Gorham, in his will dated September 23, 1748, proved August 7, 1750, gave all of his real estate to his only surviving son, George Gorham of Stamford, Connecticut. His personal estate was divided equally among his seven beloved daughters, the same as those named in son Daniel's will quoted above. His wife, Puella, was not mentioned and had probably died earlier. Deacon John Hinkley of Barnstable was named executor. Witnesses were Samuel Annable, Thomas Annable and Mary Bourn. Shubal's real estate was appraised at ?266 and his personal estate at ?99.
