About Stephen Smith
Son of Samuel and Kesiah Lane Smith. Stephen married (1) Mary (Polly) Huggins, and (2) Rhoda White.
"Old John Huggins' daughter, Mary (Polly as she was called), married the late Stephen Smith; by this marriage several sons and daughters were born; the sons were, and are, Ebenezer, George W., S. Elmore, Benjamin Gause, S. Whiteford and J. Emory Smith, and another, named Augustus, who was killed during the war on a train near Florence; and daughters, Mrs. Mitchell Martin, Mrs. George W. Rogers, Mrs. J. C. Harrelson and Mrs. Celia Atkinson." page 264, A History of Marion County
"Stephen Smith, brother of John L. and a grandson of old Osborne Lane, married Polly Huggins, a daughter of old John Huggins, of Huggins Bridge, on Little Pee Dee; by this marriage seven sons and four daughters were born and raised; the sons were George W., Ebenezer, B. Gause, S. Elmore, S. W. Smith, J. Emory (all gallant soldiers in the war), and another killed on the railroad, near FLorence, during the war." page 392, A History of Marion County

Stephen bought 456 acres of land in 1853 from Col. William S. Mullins. He owned the first store in Mullins and was the first postmaster and the first secretary of Damascus Lodge AFM.
