About Thomas Hord
Thomas Hord I, Gentleman was born in Ewell, Surrey, England on September 7,1701.; his parents were John Hord I, Gentleman(1664-1749) and Elizabeth Jane Hord who emigrated from England to Middle Essex County, Virginia shortly after Thomas was born. In 1717 the family purchased land in Essex County, which later became Caroline County, Virginia. There, they established a plantation they named Shady Grove where Thomas grew to adulthood.
Thomas was married to Jane Miller in Virginia on June 24,1726. At that time he was an attorney in Essex/Caroline Counties. On April 5, 1740 he took an oath that established him as a citizen of Virginia. Sometime between 1741 and 1743 he and his wife moved to King George County which became Stafford County about 10 years after he died. There he served as an Inspector, Surveyor and Appraiser. When his father died in 1749 he inherited 250 acres of land in King George/Stafford County in Falmouth, Virginia. Here, he and his family, which consisted of ten children who were all born before his father died in 1749, resided until his death on September 4,1766. In his Will he left his property to his wife who lived beyond 1772.
The last child of Thomas and Jane, Jesse, married his cousin, Anthoret, daughter of Peter Hord I, and moved to Kentucky; they are believed to be the first Hord family members to leave Virginia. Jesse is the grandfather of Judge Francis Triplett Hord, the great grandfather of William Taliaferro Hord and the great great grandfather of Reverend Arnold Harris Hord, all prominent members of the Hord Family.
Thomas's parents, John and Elizabeth Hord, lived and died at Shady Grove and are assumed to be buried in the Hord Family Cemetery there. It is very likely, but not certain, that Thomas and his wife were interred in the Hord Family Cemetery as well. There are approximately 40 graves in this cemetery which are all unmarked.
The genealogy of Thomas Hord, Gentleman is recorded in a book by that name published by Reverend Arnold Harris Hord in 1913 at the link that follows:
