About John Hord, II
John Hord II was born in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1708; he was christened there at Christ Church on August 1, 1708. He was the fourth child of John Hord I, Gentleman and Elizabeth Jane Hord who emigrated from Ewell, Surrey, England to Virginia about 1702. Eventually, the family settled in Caroline County about 1717 on a plantation they named Shady Grove where John spent the remainder of his childhood.
John married Miss Sarah Redd of Caroline County. In 1734 they were living in Essex County where John was an Appraiser. Later, in 1741 they were residents of Hamilton Parish in Prince William County. Sometime afterward they moved to Culpeper County, Virginia. They had five children, viz.: Thomas, James, Frances, Ambrose and Elizabeth.
On July 21,1783 John Hord II died; his wife predeceased him. In his Will he only mentions two of his children, Ambrose and Frances, however his son, Thomas, was living in Mechlenburg, Virginia when his father died. It is highly likely, but not certain, that John Hord II and his wife are buried in the Hord Family Cemetery at Shady Grove although they died in Culpepper County, VA.
For reasons unknown, John Hord II was the only son in the Will of his father that did not receive any land or a substantial part of the family estate, instead he was only bequeathed a single slave. This suggests that he may not have had a very good relationship with his father.
