Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Powell-266

Thomas Powell was an early settler of New Haven, however he did not sign the fundamental agreement in 1639 with the first comers indicating his later arrival.[1]

He was granted meadow land in the Mill meadow and the Island in the East River in Jan 1641 and his daughter Hannah was baptized in Aug 1641. There is a discrepancy in the records. In 1643, he was enumerated with only one person in his household, himself. Where was his wife and two children? He had then an estate of £100, about 38 acres of land and was taxed 8s. 6d. It is not unusual that he incurred a fine for coming late to training in 1643.[1]

Thomas signed the Oath of Fidelity in 1644 and was chosen as a fence viewer that year. He received other grants of land and was part of committees, and on other occasions was part of the early court records. [1]

His will is dated 29 September 1681.[3] Thomas Powell, d. 3 Oct 1681 - New Haven VR[2] His inventory is taken on the "27th of the 8th mo 1681" (27 October 1681) in New Haven.[3]

An accurate account of his life in New Haven is given in: Louis Effingham De Forest, "Moore and Allied Families: The Ancestry of William Henry Moore", New York 1938, page 429-433. < Archive.org >

Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Powell-266

Thomas Powell died in New Haven, Connecticut, on October 3, 1681.[4] His parents are not mentioned, but Jacobus said that Thomas's wife was Priscilla -. Some people believe that Thomas’s parents were Thomas Powell and Elizabeth Parsons, that he was born in 1616 in Milden, Suffolk, England, and that his wife was Priscilla Whitson, but no sources have been given for that information. The parents have been detached from this profile.

Disambiguation

The Thomas Powell who died 10/3/1681 in New Haven had 6 daughters according to Jacobus, “Families of Ancient New Haven”.[5] There has been some confusion about a possible son, also named Thomas Powell, but it seems very likely that he was the son of a different Thomas Powell, so he also has been detached.

In an article about Thomas Powell, "the son", (1641-1722), in Wikipedia, see reference #2: "Powell History and Genealogy in America". Retrieved 2012-04-22. "In 1638 a company of English landed at Boston under the leadership of Davenport and Eaton. Almost immediately they went by boat to settle at New Haven, Conn. Among them there was a Thomas Powell and his wife, Priscilla. He was born in England in 1616 and died in New Haven in 1681... A daughter, Hannah (born 1641 died 1710) she married Thomas Tuttle. There is no evidence of any other descendants of this New Haven family." This source has two men named Thomas Powell with years of 1616–1681. The first has a wife named Priscilla, but no son named Thomas, and no involvement with the rum trade. Further down the page is a Capt. Thomas Powell involved in the wine and rum trade and whose wife's name is unknown. This source lists the second as father of Thomas Powell, born August 1641, the same year Hannah (daughter of the other Thomas Powell) was born. Some sources say the two fathers were the same man and surmise that Thomas & Hannah were twins and that Thomas was disowned by his parents (no reason given).
