Lawrence was born on November 22, 1826 in Boston, Massachusetts. He entered law school, but did not finish because of permanent deafness from complications from an injury he suffered. In 1850 he followed his father to Europe. His father was a Minister to the American Embassy in England.
In 1861 Colonel Lawrence became the U.S. Consul General in Florence. In the summer of 1868, while still serving as consul general, he held the position of Chargé d’Affaires in Florence during the absence of the American Minister. He died on March 21, 1869.
