Alexander Hasidism today

After the Holocaust, the Jewish world was in a daze. Many chassidim who lost their Rebbes joined other chassidic groups with similar teachings. Many Aleksander chassidim believed that Chassedei Aleksander was completely destroyed. Many survivors sought to find a new Rebbe and to rebuild Aleksander chassidus. The chassidim first approached the son of the Betzalel Yair, nephew of the Akeidas Yitzchak, Rabbi Yechiel Menachem Zynger, and asked him to become the Rebbe of Aleksander. Zynger, who worked as a diamond dealer in Boro Park at the time, rejected the request to assume leadership of Aleksander chassidus, claiming that Aleksander was wiped out and there was nothing left to lead. Later on, when Alexander Chasidus in Israel was rebuilt, he agreed to become the Alexanderer Rebbe in America.

Today there are two Grand Rebbes of Alexander, one in Bnei Brak, Israel, and one in America in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn, New York. There are around seven hundred Aleksander chassidim living in communities in Bnei Berak, Jerusalem, Borough Park Brooklyn NY, Antwerp, London, and Australia.

Personal

After the Nazi Germany invasion of Russia in 1941 in WWII, Yechiel Menachem and his future brother in-law, Isaac Topola, and other Yeshiva fellow students escaped to Lithuania and in 1942 were given "transit visas" to Japan, by the Japanese Consul (an act of mercy of the consul, contrary to his government orders). They traveled through Siberia and China, and settled in Shanghai in the Jewish Ghetto, where the Shanghai Jewish community helped them survive. They lived there and studied in a Yeshiva in the Ghetto until 1945. Itche came down with severe pneumonia and almost died. Chil-Menachem saved his life by purchasing penicillin for him ($300/shot - in 1945!). When the war ended, both went through Moscow on their way to the USA, but were required to pay a $500 "fine" to get exit visas from the Soviet Union. Lacking the money, the poor students appealed to the Jewish community in the Moscow synagogue, and the money was raised (illegally, in US currency), and they were able to leave. They came to the USA in 1946, and Yechiel Menachem married Rachel Topola, Isaac's youngest sister.

לאחר השואה בה הושמדו אלפי חסידי אלכסנדר בתוך שאר יהדות אירופה, ונטבחו רוב צאצאי האדמו"רים, התפלגה חסידות אלכסנדר לשתי חצרות, בישראל ובארצות הברית.

בארצות הברית התיישב רבי יחיאל מנחם זינגר, נינו של רבי שמואל צבי דנציגר מאלכסנדר, והקים את חצרו בבורו פארק. רבי יחיאל מנחם נפטר בשנת 1988, ובמקומו מכהן בנו רבי יוסף יצחק מאיר זינגר.

ר' יחיאל מנחם זינגער מאלכסנדר

נולד בשנת תרע"ט בעיר אלכסנדר לאביו ר' יעקב שרגא פייביל אב"ד אסטראוו מאז. בן ר' יצחק מאיר אב"ד אלכסנדר חתן הרה"ק בעל "תפארת שמואל" מאלכסנדר זי"ע.

ולאמו הרבנית יוטא בת הרה"ק ר' יוסף מאמשינוב זי"ע.

נתגדל בבית דודו הרה"ק בעל "עקידת יצחק" מאלכסנדר זי"ע הי"ד.

במלחמת העולם נמלט לווילנא ומשם לשנחאי שבסין ביחד עם דודו ר' שמעון שלום מאמשינוב זי"ע ועם חברו לספסל הלימודים בווילנא - יצחק טופולא מסאדאוונא (לימים גיסו). לאחר המלחמה הגר לארה"ב והקים את ביתו בברוקלין שבניו יורק. בתחילת דרכו בארה"ב עסק בסחר יהלומים.

נשא את בת ר' ישראל יעקב טאפאלא אב"ד סאדאוונא.

אחרי המלחמה חסידי אלכסנדר הכתירו אותו לאדמו"ר בהיותו השריד היחיד מנכדי ה'תפארת שמואל' שנמלט מהשואה.

הו"ל ספרי 'ישמח ישראל' 'תפארת שמואל'.

בסוף ימיו הקים ישיבה בבורו פארק שבברוקלין בשם "תפארת שמואל".

אחותו שפרה מילאה עליו דף עד ב"יד ושם" בתאריך 10.9.09
