His first rabbinical position was in Rudnik.

In 1830 he was appointed as the town rabbi of Sanz, where he founded a Hasidic dynasty. He attracted many followers, and students, due to his piety and greatness. Sanz has been succeeded nowadays by the Sanz-Klausenberg and the Bobov Hasidic dynasties, among others.

His sons all became famous Rebbes (except for Myer Noson who predeceased him).

The Divrei Chaim died in Sanz, Austria-Hungary (now Poland) in 1876 (25 Nissan 5636 on the Hebrew calendar).

The Divrei Chaim was acclaimed by the leading rabbis of his generation as one of the foremost Talmudists and Kabbalistic authorities of his time, he received queries from Rabbis and communities from all over the world.

His responsa (שאלות ותשובות), as well as his Torah commentaries, published under the title Divrei Chaim, reflect his Torah greatness, his humility, and his compassionate nature. He was a champion of the poor and established many organizations to relieve them of their poverty. He was the first Honorary President of Kolel Chibat Yerushalayim. His compassion and generosity was legendary; he literally gave away everything he had for the needy; and went to sleep penniless.

During his 46 years as Rabbi of Sanz; that city was transformed into a vibrant center of Hasidism attracting tens of thousands of followers. Among his many disciples, are counted such leaders as Rabbi Zvi Hirsh Friedlander of Liska, the Tiferet Shlome of Radomsk, Rabbi Meir Horowitz of Dzhikov, and the Yetev Lev of Sighet. He studied with his brother-in-law Yosef Babad, author of the Minchat Chinuch.

Personal Biography.

From birth, Chaim was a sickly child. Once when he was brought o the Chozeh (Seer) of Lublin, the Sage prophesied a great future for the child and that he would be blessed with a long life. As he grew, he remained with a limp in one leg.

The son of R. Baruch Frankel-Teomim, R. Joshua Heschel of Komarno introduced Chaim to his father who chose him as a son-in-law through two of his daughters. However, initially the first daughter was reluctant to marry someone with a deformity. Chaim requested to speak to her alone in private. What was spoken remains a secret unto this day, but after that they were married and had eight children, and when she died he remarried her sister but they had no children.

In 1862 he married a third time to Rachel, daughter of R. Jehiel Zvi Ungar of Tarnow and had six more children.

Always ready to champion the needy, it is said that when he was already old, he once came across a weeping apple-vendor in the market place. She bemoaned the fact that no one came to buy, and if this continued she would be ruined. Thereupon the great Sage took her place and called out "Fine apples to buy". Within a short while the news spread across town so that all the apples were sold, the people considering it a great honor to buy from the revered and famous Rabbi.

Recognized as the universal leader of Klal Yisroel in his generation, he was turned to by all to resolve all types of difficulties. He authored a book of halachic responsa as well as a Torah commentary and commentary on the Talmudic tractate Bava Metzia, all entitled "Divrei Chaim."
