The Haycock takes its name from a tale by Richard Braithwaite published in 1638 called 'Barnabae Itinerarium' about the adventures of 'Drunken Barnabee'. Barnabee arrived at Wansford and saw a cottage door inscribed with "Lord have mercy on me" realising that Wansford was in the grip of the plague he fell asleep on a haycock by the River Nene. The tale recounts the following events ....

On a haycock sleeping soundly,
Th’river rose and tooke me roundly;
Downe the currrente, people cryed,
Sleeping, down the streame I hyed,
’Where away,‘ quoth they, ’from Greenland?‘
’No, from Wansford Brigs in England.‘

The Manor Hemingford Grey, Built about 1130, The Manor is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in the country. Here the author Lucy Boston based her Green Knowe books and readers feel that they are walking into the books. In the winter Lucy Boston sewed exquisite patchworks. They form the only collection of this calibre worldwide, which can be seen in the house where they were made. The 3 1/2 acre garden contains topiary, old roses and mixed herbaceous borders filled with mainly scented plants of year-round interest. It is bordered by the river Great Ouse and surrounded by wilderness full of wild life.
