Berkeley Castle (historically sometimes spelt Berkley Castle) is a castle in the town of Berkeley, Gloucestershire. The castle's origins date back to the 11th century and it has been designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building. The castle has remained within the Berkeley family since they reconstructed it in the 12th century built for Thomas de Berkeley, 3rd Baron Berkeley, except for a period of royal ownership by the Tudors. It is traditionally believed to be the scene of the murder of King Edward II in 1327

Down Ampney House - Detached hall house. Late C15 or early C16, described by Leland in "Journey through Wiltshire" of 1540-42, altered by Sir John Soane c1799. Built for Hungerford family, in possession from 1361 (earlier manor house built on site c1270) until 1658.

Sydney Dennis as living at Down Ampney House. In... the south transept of t he Church of All Saints, placed within an ornamented arch, in an altar tomb, with recumbent effiges of a knight in armour, representing Sir Nicholas de Villiers and a lady: in the north transept is a marble marble monument, richly gilt, with effiges in armour kneeling, to Sir Anthony Hungerford, kt ob. 1653, and Sir John Hungerford kt. ob. 1637.

The north transept, or Hungerford Chapel, is enclosed within an oak screen. In the chapel is a memorial to Sir James Hungerford and his son Anthony, successive lords of the manor and owners of Down Ampney House. The gilded, ornate monument dates to 1637 and shows father and son facing each other across a prayer desk in a typically pious pose. Directly opposite the memorial, on the west wall, is a small brass plaque to Mary Berkeley, 1st wife of Sir John Hungerford of Down Ampney.
