About the Herold surname

DNA analysis indicates French, Basque, Scottish and Danish (Viking) origins. The current spelling of Herold appears to derive from the (French)Netherlands where the "H" is silent. Prior to the family migration south into Belgium (Flanders), the family was located in France where the name was known as Herault. Again with a silent "H". Further back in time, DNA further suggests that, due to the arrival of a Danish (Viking) forbear upon Scottish soil, the name had been Airault. Forbears who remained in Scotland were known as MacArault(sp). Although there is also a Jewish genetic element to the DNA, analysis appears to indicate that presence existed very early in the family tree.
