About the Pipano surname

The family name “Pipano” belongs to an ancient family originating from Aragon (autonomous community in Northeastern Spain) with ramification to Castillia (1300) – language spoken in Northern Spain (Castillian Spanish). Philology – study of languages in written historical sources; as such it is a combination of literary studies, history and linguistics. Outstanding member of this family of scientists and writers, famous during this period, was the philologist of the XII century, Solomon Ibn Pipan(o) – collaborator of Yehuda Ha-Levi and Abraham Ibn Ezra. Solomon Ibn Pipano published “Mahberet he-aruh” – a kind of Talmudic dictionary, using scientific material of Ibn Eshanah Jayudush. His work is original and contains valuable material on the habits (customs) of the Jews in this period.
