Hi Brendan,
I cant take credit for the information, my cousin did all the donkey work many years ago, and printed it in book form, it has a wealth of information in it about the Cairncross family. You can use the information with pleasure, and can link us too if you wish. Good luck with the project best wishes Norah

Hi Norah Wow, your info is amazing. Thank you so much. I strongly suspect it was William the Law Agent. Frans Adriaan Swemmer's father, also a Frans Adriaan Swemmer, was the Deputy Sheriff of George and I think his son followed in his footsteps. He might have been a Law Agent as well and somewhere along the line there are Swemmers involved in the tying up of estates and wills etc. Which, as you can imagine, makes going through the archives rather tedious :-) The main reason I ask is because I want to start a Project on the Swemmers of South Africa and I would want to include all your info if you don't mind. Or perhaps you could just join us. June, Private User, amongst others, has agreed to help. Regards Brendan

Hi Brendan Do you know what kind of business it was? William senior (1788-1868) was a baker in Cape Town (moved from one location to another) he also had a steam mill in Grave st. The next William (1814-1884) followed in his fathers footstep, was also a baker, had a shop next to the old Standard Bank building in Adderley St. he eventually went insolvent, but I have no knowledge of other undertaking by him. William 1841-1915 seems the most likely but all I know about him is that he studied Architecture at the South African College and joined the Public Works Department as Clerk of Works on 1st July 1880, he retired in 1897 and lived in Cape Town. There was a William (1835-1915) son of a Thomas Cairncross. This William was a Law Agent in Swellendam. He married Jeanette Elizabeth Lombard in 1865. Around 1870 he moved to Uniondale where he set up a Law and Auctioneering agency as well as being a farmer. He was also Justice of the Peace. He was interested in Ornithology and contributed specimens of birds and birds eggs to the SA Museum in Cape Town. Now unfortunately there is yet another William of whom we have absolutely no information other than he was born in Harlem. No dates or anything, sorry. His father was a David (1826-1900) but David had 3 different wives, producing numerous children, William being just one of them. I would be interested to know if any of the information was of use to you. Regards Norah

Hi

William Cairncross and Frans Adriaan Swemmer Frans Adriaan Swemmer formed a company way back in or around the 1880s. Do you perhaps know which William Cairncross it was and do you perhaps know anything else other than what is in NAAIRS?

Thanks Brendan
