Original derivation is "Jansen". Brothers Jacob & Hans Jansen originally came from the island of Noordstrant which was devasted by the great flood of 1634. Hans arrived in New York in June, 1639. He followed the Dutch custom and became Hans Jansen Van Noordstrant (eventually Van Nostrand) meaning "from Noordstrant". Given the location of the island and the spelling of Jansen, his family was most probably Danish.
