The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

This weekend, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their second child! The new little princess has been named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Kate gave birth to her daughter on Saturday, May 2 at 8:34am London time, less than three hours after she checked into St. Mary’s Hospital. The princess weighed 8 pounds and 3 ounces.

Now that her name has been officially released, here are some things to know about the newest addition to the royal family:

1. Keeping with royal tradition, the birth of the Duke’s and Duchess’ daughter was announced via letter and gold easel. It was the same easel that had been used in the announcement for the births of her father, Prince William, and her brother, George.

2. Two days after her birth, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge revealed that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, a touching tribute to the members of the royal family. The name honors her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and her paternal grandmother, Princess Diana. Charlotte, a feminine version of Charles, is a nod to her grandfather, Prince Charles. The name Charlotte can also be found in Kate’s family tree; it is also the middle name of Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton.

The royal baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

3. The hospital in which Princess Charlotte was born, St. Mary’s Hospital, is the same hospital where her older brother George, and her father Prince William, were born. And like the birth of his first child, Prince William was again present in the delivery room for the birth of his daughter.

4. Her first official visitor was her big brother George. Prince William briefly left the hospital to pick up the young Prince to meet his new baby sister.

5. The princess will be fourth in line to the throne. Princess Charlotte now bumps her uncle, Prince Harry, to fifth in the line of succession.

6. Although she, as well as George, will not hold a legal surname, they will likely use Cambridge as their surnames in school. Another possibility is Mountbatten-Windsor.

7. In honor of her birth, the Princess was given a 41 gun salute in London. Gun salutes are a tradition on the birth of every prince or princess. She was also given a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London.

8. Princess Charlotte shares her birthday with some famous British figures. This includes David Beckham and Lily Allen.

9. She’s the perfect anniversary gift – the princess was born just three days after her parents celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary.

10. She is the first princess to be born to the royal family in 25 years. The last was Prince Andrew’s daughter, Princess Eugenie in 1990.

What do you think of the new princess’ name?
