Three time Oscar winning actress Ingrid Bergman was born in Stockholm, Sweden on August 29, 1915. Bergman first began her career appearing in Swedish and European films and made a successful transition to American cinema. Considered one of the greatest actresses of all time, Bergman would be best remembered for her role opposite Humphrey Bogart in the classic 1942 film, Casablanca. In addition to her three Academy Awards, she earned throughout her career two Emmys and a Tony award for Best Actress.

Bergman lost both of her parents early in her childhood. At the age of three, her mother Frieda died. Her father Justus Bergman, who was an artist and photographer, passed away ten years later when she was 13. She would go on to live with her aunt and uncle, who encouraged and supported her passion for acting.

Bergman’s affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini and subsequent pregnancy would cause a great scandal in Hollywood. While divorcing her husband, Petter Lindstrom, Bergman moved to Italy with Roberto. They would have three children, a son and twin girls. Perhaps her most famous child is former model and actress Isabella Rossellini, who is best known for her roles in film such as Blue Velvet. Her twin sister, Isotta is a professor of  Italian literature.
