Featured Project: Age of Discovery (1200-1600)

Today we highlight the Age of Discovery project. The years between 1200-1600 were known as Europe’s Age of Discovery. During this time, Europeans engaged in heavy exploration of the world, established contact with other continents and people and proceeded to map the world. This overseas expansion lead to the rise of colonial empires and the establishment of new trade routes. These routes allowed for the exchange of exotic goods, culture and peoples (slaves). Check out the early world explorers included in the project and collaborate to add more adventurous ancestors!

A peek at a few of the explorers included:

Humphrey Gilbert – He was an adventurer, explorer and a pioneer of English colonization in Ireland and North America.
Sir Francis Drake – He was an English sea captain and privateer. He is credited with being the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world.
Sir Martin Frobisher – He was a famous English seaman who made three voyages to the New World to look for the Northwest Passage.
Christopher Columbus – He was a Spanish explorer who completed four voyages across the Atlantic to the American continents. His expeditions played a significant role in Spain’s colonization of the New World.
