Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was first introduced at the end of the Civil War to commemorate Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the war. However, after the devastation of World War I, the observance was expanded to encompass all American soldiers who have died in service. Traditionally, families will visit the graves of their fallen military relatives, while communities, large and small, will honor their sacrifice with parades, public events and barbecues.
