New Enhancements: Merging Help

Posted February 5, 2009 by Geni | No Comment

One of the goals of Geni is to create a single, comprehensive tree of everyone in the world. Part of this process is curating the tree by finding and merging duplicate profiles. We've made some changes to help the users who are engaged in this process:

  • Request Management: Every profile has a manager, by default the person who added the profile, who controls the privacy of that profile. Sometimes you'll find that a profile is more relevant to you than to the manager. Use the Request Management of this Profile link at the bottom of a profile to request management. If the manager approves, you will be the new manager of that profile. We hope that over time more profiles will be managed by those users willing to merge them to consolidate the tree.
  • Ancestor Permissions: You can now view the full profile of any of your ancestors. This will help you verify information when evaluating potential duplicate profiles for your ancestors.
  • View Tree: The View Tree button now appears on all deceased profiles. Keep in mind that standard tree privacy rules apply when viewing these trees. Viewing the tree will help you to determine whether a profile is a duplicate profile.
