Abraham Lincoln

On this day in 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in Ford’s Theatre by John Wilkes Booth. Mortally wounded, President Lincoln was carried to a lodging house across from the theater. He would die early the next morning, making him the first U.S. president to be assassinated. The attack came just days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War.
