Profile of the Day: Anne, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland

Do you have royal connections? On this day in 1702, Queen Anne, sister of Mary II, became Queen regnant of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Anne was the second daughter born to James II and VII and his first wife, Anne Hyde. When Anne’s father was deposed in the Glorious Revolution, her brother-in-law, William III, and her sister, Mary II, became joint monarchs. Although the sisters had been close, they became estranged over the years. After Mary died in 1694, William III ruled as a sole monarch until his death in 1702. Since the couple had no children, Anne succeeded to the throne on March 8, 1702.

Under her rule, Anne united the kingdoms of England and Scotland into a single sovereign state known as Great Britain. She continued to reign as the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1707. With no heir of her own, she was succeeded by her cousin George I of the House of Hanover.
