Happy birthday to Barack Obama! Today he turns 56.

On August 4, 1961, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Ann Dunham and Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. His mother was born in Wichita, Kansas and his father was born in Nyanza Province, Kenya. His parents had met while attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa and married just six months before he was born. Growing up, Obama was not close to his father. His parents divorced while he was still young and his mother remarried.

He spent much of his childhood growing up in Hawaii with his maternal grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham. During World War II, his grandfather served in General George Patton’s army in Europe, while back home, his grandmother worked on a bomber assembly line. Sadly, his grandmother would not live to see Obama elected the 44th President of the United States. She died at the age of 86 just two days before the 2008 presidential election.
