Charles Darwin

On December 27, 1831, Charles Darwin set sail on the HMS Beagle, beginning a five-year survey expedition of the southern Atlantic and Pacific oceans.  His discoveries during his voyage led him to form the basis of his theories in evolution. In 1859, he published On the Origin of Species, his groundbreaking piece of scientific literature which laid out his theories of evolution through natural selection.
