Young was born Denton True Young to Nancy Miller and McKinzie Young. The oldest of five children, Young stopped his formal education after the sixth grade to help out on his family’s farm. Around this same time, Young discovered a love for baseball. He played in local baseball teams before he was signed to play for the minor league team in Canton, Ohio. He was given the nickname “Cyclone,” which was later shortened to “Cy.”

In 1890, Young joined the major leagues as a pitcher for the Cleveland Spiders. During his 22-year career in baseball, Young pitched for five different teams. By the time of his retirement, Young held numerous records, many of which have yet to be broken today. Young was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.

He died on November 4, 1955 at the age of 88.
