Soccer superstar David Beckham has been named this year’s sexiest man alive by People magazine. At the age of 40, Beckham receives the honor on its 30th anniversary. The title has become a staple of the popular magazine and now, Beckham joins the ranks alongside Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Johnny Depp.

Beckham was born May 2, 1975 in London, England to David Edward Alan “Ted” Beckham and Sandra West. The middle child between two sisters, the Beckhams were passionate fans of Manchester United. He played soccer regularly growing up and soon his natural talent caught the eye of Manchester United team officials. By the age of 16, he left home and began playing for their training team. Two years later he signed on to the club as a full-time player.

Considered one of the top players of the sport, Beckham has consistently ranked as one of the top paid athletes in the world. Since retiring, he’s devoted much of his time to working with various charities.

Did you know Beckham has some Jewish heritage? His maternal grandfather, Joseph West, was Jewish. He also has ties to the British military. His great grandfather, Edward Charles Beckham, served as a Royal Navy Seaman.
