Emma Lazarus

On July 22, 1849, poet Emma Lazarus was born in New York City, New York. She is best known for her sonnet “The New Colossus,” which was written in 1883. In 1903, the sonnet was inscribed on a bronze plaque in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, including the iconic lines:

“Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”
