Stephen Grover Cleveland was born on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. The fifth of nine children, he was named Stephen in honor of the first pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell, where his father was a pastor at the time. He didn’t begin using the name Grover until he was an adult.
