Profile of the Day: H.P. Lovecraft
On this day in 1937, writer H.P. Lovecraft died at the age of 46. Today, Lovecraft is remembered as one of the most significant writers of horror fiction.
He was born Howard Phillips Lovecraft on August 20, 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island. When Lovecraft was 3, his father was committed to a psychiatric facility and remained there until his death in 1898. An only child, Lovecraft became an avid reader and developed a keen interest in science and astronomy.
Although he published many of his stories in the pulp fiction magazine, Weird Tales, Lovecraft did not achieve much commercial success during his lifetime. It wasn’t until after his death that his stories, such as his Cthulhu mythos series, would achieve any acclaim. Today he is often referred to as the master of fantastical horror stories and has inspired future best-selling authors such as Stephen King.
