Hank Williams

Are you a country music fan? On this day in 1923, country music’s first superstar, Hank Williams, was born. Although his career was cut short after his death at the age of 29, Williams is often regraded as one of the most influential singers and songwriters of the 20th century.

Williams was born Hiram King Williams on September 17, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama to Jessie Lillybelle Skipper and Elonzo Huble Williams. His father was drafted during World War I and suffered severe injuries after falling from a truck. He worked for a lumber company until entering the VA hospital, where he would remain for eight years.

Williams learned to the play the guitar at a young age and was greatly influenced by local gospel music. After making his debut on the radio and participating in local talent shows, Williams caught the attention of Nashville. After releasing his first hit song, “Move It on Over,” in 1947, Williams’s fame rose quickly. In just a few short years, Williams released a series of chart-topping hits. However, during this time, Williams also struggled with abusing prescription medication and alcohol. Sadly, in the early hours of New Year’s Day in 1953, Williams died of heart failure at the age of 29.
