Profile of the Day: Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman

On this day in 1849, Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery in the South. She would go on to lead many others to freedom along the Underground Railroad.

Araminta Harriet Ross was one of nine children born to Harriet “Rit” and Ben Ross. She was born into slavery around 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland.

On September 17, 1849, Harriet escaped to Philadelphia. She would soon return to Maryland to lead her family and many others to freedom in the North. Her leadership and guidance earned her the nickname “Moses.”

During the American Civil War, she worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and later as an armed scout and spy.

Today, Harriet Tubman remains an American icon of courage and freedom.
