Profile of the Day: Henry V of England

On this day in 1413, Henry V was crowned King of England. The second English monarch of the House of Lancaster, Henry V was considered to be one of the great warrior kings in English history.

Henry V was the eldest son of Henry IV of England and Mary de Bohun and the great grandson of Edward III of England. In 1398, his father was exiled and Henry was taken under the charge of Richard II. However, in 1399, Richard was deposed and Henry IV had taken control of the crown. With his father as king, Henry was given command of part of the English forces and when his father died on March 20, 1413, Henry ascended to the throne. He was crowned the King of England on April 9, 1413 at Westminster Abbey.

During his lifetime, Henry led two successful invasions of France. His famous victory at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 led to his eventual control of the French throne and made England one of the strongest kingdoms in Europe.

Henry V died suddenly on August 31, 1422. At the time of his death, he had reigned for only 9 years. He was succeeded by his infant son, Henry VI.
