Bergman was born on August 29, 1915 in Stockholm, Sweden. After losing both her parents while she was young, Bergman went to live with her aunt and uncle. At the age of 17, she earned a scholarship to the Royal Dramatic Theatre School, but left after a year to pursue her acting career full time.

Already a star in Sweden, Bergman landed her first role in a Hollywood film in the 1939 movie Intermezzo: A Love Story. In 1942, Bergman’s career exploded when she starred in the classic film, Casablanca opposite Humphrey Bogart. Shortly after, she received her first Academy Award nomination for the movie For Whom the Bell Tolls, and the following year, won the coveted statue for her role in Gaslight. Today Bergman is remembered as one of the greatest actors in Hollywood history.

Bergman died of breast cancer on her 67th birthday on August 29, 1982.
