James Matthew Barrie was the ninth child of ten born to a conservative Calvinist family. He moved to London to pursue a career as a novelist and playwright. It was there that he first met the Llewelyn Davies boys, who would inspire him to write of the mischievous boy who can fly and never grow up. Despite having a successful literary career, his fairy tale play Peter Pan continues to be his best known work. Shortly before his death, he gave the rights to all his Peter Pan works to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, a children’s hospital in London. Today, his tales of Neverland continue to entertain children and adults alike.
