Do you have roots in the Old West? Wild Bill Hickok, one of America’s most legendary gunslingers, was born on this day in 1837.

Born and raised on a farm in rural Illinois, James Butler Hickok lived a life filled of adventures. During the American Civil War, Hickok served as a scout and spy for the Union army. He also worked as a stagecoach driver and lawman. A gifted marksman from an early age, the legend of Wild Bill’s quick draw was known throughout the American Wild West.

While living in Deadwood, South Dakota, Hickok became a regular poker player at the Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon. In 1876, Hickok was shot in the back and killed while playing a game of poker. His hand at the time of his death, a pair of black aces and eights, would become known as the “dead man’s hand.”
