On this day in 1775, English novelist Jane Austen was born.

Profile of the Day; Jane Austen

Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in Stevenson, Hampshire, England to Reverend George Austen and Cassandra Leigh. One of eight children, Austen had a close relationship with her sister, Cassandra. Growing up, the sisters were encouraged to read from their father’s extensive library. Austen would often write poems, stories, and plays to amuse her family.

Although she began writing as a teen, it was not until she was in her thirties that Austen began to publish her novels anonymously. These novels include, Sense and SensibilitiesPride and PrejudiceMansfield Park, and Emma. The novels achieved moderate success during her lifetime, but it was not until after her death that her brother revealed that she was the author.

Austen died on July 18, 1817 at the age of 41. Remembered as one of the greatest English novelists in history, her novels have been adapted several times for television and film.
