Today actor Kevin Bacon celebrates his 63rd birthday!

The actor and musician was born on July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Edmund Norwood Bacon and Ruth Holmes. His father was a prominent architect and served as the Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. Sometimes called the “Father of Modern Philadelphia,” the elder Bacon’s vision helped shape much of today’s Philadelphia.

Bacon made his film debut in the 1978 comedy Animal House, but his role in the hit movie failed to jumpstart his career. It wasn’t until after he starred in the box office hit Footloose that Bacon became a household name. Despite later struggles with replicating his early box office success, Bacon continued to find work in a wide variety of genres in both film and television. His prolific career has made him the focus of the popular trivia game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” where individuals are challenged to connect the actor to another celebrity in the fewest connections.
