Famous painter Pablo Picasso died on this day in 1973. Named one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, Picasso proved to be an immensely successful and prolific artist during his lifetime.

He was baptized Pablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maria de los remedios Cipriano de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso, a series of names honoring various saints and relatives. Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 to Don Jose Ruiz y Blasco and Maria Picasso y Lopez. His father was a painter who specialized in naturalistic depictions of birds or other game, while his mother was a professor of art at the School of Crafts and a curator of a local museum. As the child of artists, it was inevitable that Picasso would follow in his parents’ footsteps.

Picasso’s artwork can be characterized by specific periods in his life. He is credited with co-founding Cubism, which is considered one of the most influential art movements of the 20th century.
