Prince Philip was born on June 10, 1921 in Mon Repos on the Greek Island of Corfu. He was the only son and fifth child born to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Through his maternal grandmother, Philip is a direct descendant of Queen Victoria, who is his second great grandmother. As an infant, his family was banished from Greece after his uncle, King Constantine I of Greece, was forced to abdicate the throne.

In 1947, Philip married Princess Elizabeth in Westminster Abbey. The wedding was broadcasted on the radio to over 200 million people around the world. Elizabeth would ascended to the throne a few years later in 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI. In 2017, Philip retired from his royal duties. Today he remains the longest-serving royal consort in British history and is the oldest male member of the royal family.
