Born on September 8, 1157, Richard was the third of five sons born to King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was known as Richard the Lionheart for his reputation as a great military leader and warrior.

During his reign, Richard spent the majority of his time outside of England. He joined the Third Crusade after the capture of Jerusalem by Saladin. In his absence, Richard’s younger brother, John, made an unsuccessful attempt to seize the throne. Despite the act of betrayal, Richard named him his heir, replacing his nephew, Arthur.

With many victories in battle, stories of Richard’s military exploits became popular amongst his subjects. The stories of his triumphs has made him an enduring figure of Medieval folklore.
